Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
